Colorado Road Trip Oct 26

Drove out to see Davon and Dave. Hit a few trolls and national sites along the way. Pretty terrible weather unfortunately. But had a good time anyway.

Sunday 11 October. Went to church in Heber. Then on through Wyoming. First stop…Fossil Butte National Monument

No actual fossils to see but there’s the butte!

Stopped briefly at the Montpelier temple but the grounds were closed so I just enjoyed the beauty for a few minutes…

Stopped for a picnic at a city park. It was so rainy but I made it work haha

Quick stop at the Star Valley Wyoming temple since I literally drove right past it 🙂

Troll #1 for this trip…Mama Mimi near Jackson.

She has this cool leg that you can walk out on. In fact the whole area was flooded so that was literally the only dry way to make it out to the land where I’m standing

Drove through Grand Teton National Park but it was so stormy and foggy that I couldn’t see the mountains at all! So no pics 😦

Because of the low visibility I stopped for a night much sooner than I would have. I would usually have slept in my car at a rest stop or a campground, but we found traces of mice in my car. In fact I caught one in a trap literally while I was traveling on this trip. So I’m a bit creeped out by my car right now. Stopped at a cheap hotel in Dubois. I’m assuming in good weather it’s a stunning mountain town hehe

Monday, 12 October…long drive across Wyoming into Colorado

I met Davon and his fiance Callie for lunch at The Sink in Boulder. We then wandered the downtown streets. Shopped at the Peppercorn. Turns out we all love cooking and cooking supplies. 🙂 Had ice cream at Gelato Boy. Mmm. It was a delightful day.

Tuesday, 13 October

Drove down south of Denver. Stopped briefly in Colorado City…

Drove out to Cripple Creek where they have a fun old farmhouse…

…and then hiked out to the second troll of the trip, Rita the Rock Planter!

Such a beautiful spot!

Next stop was Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

Really huge petrified trees!

Could see Pikes Peak in the distance!

The monument also included a pretty decently intact early homestead

That evening I drove into Denver to have dinner with Dave at Cracker Barrel. Great food! I gave him a countdown to Halloween duck calendar since he loves the holiday so much. Also I had made some cookie dough for him – our mom’s recipe – so he was over the moon. And even more when he actually baked them. 🙂

Wednesday, 14 October

On the way back home, I saw the third and final troll, Isak Heartstone.

Also in a really pretty spot – Rotary Snowplow Park in Breckenridge

Stopped in Leadville. Checked out the cemetery on Dave’s recommendation. He loves a good Gothic cemetery.

Fun old town!

Complete with saloon

And the craziest antique store I have ever been in

Made a new friend hehe

High Mountain Pies…the incredible pizza joint that was the real reason for my visit.

Super good pizza and some of the best garlic bread I have ever had 🙂

Visited Camp Hale National Monument, the spot where they trained a winter commando unit that fought in Italy at the end of WWII.

Visited Grand Junction Colorado temple

While on the trip I listened to an incredible novel. I was so inspired.
