Atlanta

15-18 March 2018

I went to an NSTA conference. Met up with my fellow teachers Joilyn Lincoln, Becky Curtis, and April Thompson (that’s us below left to right in front of the MLKJ reflecting pool. Awesome stuff learned. Inspiring places visited. Much soul food consumed. In other words…a triumph. 🙂

Fried pickles 🙂
Went to a special event at the aquarium and saw a whale shark up close and personal

The screening of The Farthest included a panel with the author and 3 of the original team. So neat!

The NASA booth at the conference included a real suit and a moon rock that you could actually touch!

Pittypat’s Porch is the cutest place! The catfish was incredible, the peach cobbler phenomenal, and the waiter even made me a virgin mint julep!

We had lots of fun walking the town and seeing the sights at night. I love Capitol buildings just like my dad

The most impactful of the sights was the Martin Luther King Jr stuff. This is the wagon his body was carried in down this street

The fire station where he played as a boy and became the first integrated one
His birth home

I sat in Ebenezer church for like 30 minutes listening to the recordings of his sermons and gospel music. A sad and poignant moment for me
I went by myself to the art museum after the others left to catch their earlier flight

The coolest stuff there was furniture and this awesome installation called Timeline all done by Joris Laarman

Margaret Mitchell’s home
There are so many cool churches in Atlanta
I had asked Atlantans where to find the best food and I was told Mary Mac’s Tearoom so I walked quite a long way to get there
Mmm. fried catfish, fried green tomatoes, mashed potatoes, biscuits, peach cobbler, cornbread). So good that I took rolls and cinnamon rolls back to Utah with me. 🙂
